The history of Titanium Institute

The basis of the LLC “Research and Design Titanium Institute” is the employees of the State Research and Design Titanium Institute, which has a long-standing biography and glorious traditions.

The main stages of its formation and development:

August 1956. - The branch of the State Special Design Institute in Zaporozhye was created to provide the design and construction documentation for the Dnieper Titanium and Magnesium plant. Objects of primary and auxiliary production were designed, and also prototype models of apparatus and equipment for second extension of the plant were developed.

1958. - The affiliate was reorganized into the Ukrainian Non-Ferrous Metallurgy Design Institute “Ukrgiprotsvetmet”. During the implementation of the main works on the development of titanium production, the institute conducted general design for other non-ferrous metallurgy facilities in Ukraine.

1960. - The Institute forms a Research Division. Laboratories carried out the research in the field of the development and improvement of production of aluminum, titanium, organic-silicon compounds; new analysis methods were developed, physico-chemical studies and technological tests were carried out. Main directions: research projects on the creation of closed type ore-thermal furnaces and titanium slag melting technology, high-performance chlorinators, effective condensation systems, high-capacity apparatus for reduction and distillation of titanium sponge; the complex of works to improve the quality of spongy titanium was carried out.

In 1965 Titanium Institute has been appointed the leading branch institute of titanium industry and was renamed to All-Union Titanium Research and Design Institute.

In the following years, The Institute’s employees performed a complex of works   on the design of enterprises, the design of equipment and the development of equipment and technology during the construction and reconstruction of titanium-magnesium plants of Zaporozhye, Berezniki (Russia), Ust-Kamenogorsk (Kazakhstan) in collaboration with specialists from the institutes VAMI and Giredmet (Russia).

In 1976, the Berezniki branch of the Titanium Institute (Russia) was formed. As a result, the volume of performed research and design work has increased significantly, especially at the Berezniki Titanium-Magnesium Plant and Solikamsk Magnesium Plant. The Institute has acquired the function of general designer of Berezniki Titanium and Magnesium Plant and Ust-Kamenogorsk Titanium and Magnesium Plant. At the same time, important work was carried out at such industrial enterprises as Solikamsk Magnesium Plant (Russia) and Transcarpathian Pilot Plant, Dnieper Aluminum Plant and Kalush Magnesium Plant, Dnieper Electrode Plant, production association Uglekompozit, Kremniypolymer (all- in Ukraine).

1993. - In connection with Ukraine's independence the Institute was appointed leading for research and design engineering, design of non-ferrous metallurgy facilities of Ukraine, and the title was changed to the State Titanium Research and Design Institute.

Over the past 25 years, the Institute has focused its efforts on the search and development of new areas in technological and design work. The Institute actively develops international cooperation. In addition to Kazakhstan and Russia, it acquires business partners from China, India, Israel, Australia, England, Austria, Canada and other countries.

In addition to titanium and magnesium, the objects of his research and design work are technologies, pilot plants and industrial production of nickel, ferronickel, ferrotitanium, vanadium, titanium pigment, sponge zirconium, gas-oxygen refining of steel, hot metal desulfurization with granulated magnesium and production of titanium powders.

Customers are greatly interested in the Institute's capabilities in terms of environmental work, analytical production control and metrology.

The decisive advantage of the Research and Design Titanium Institute is the complex nature of the services and works it provides, flexible policy toward the partners and customers, and the provision of author's supervision of the launch and development of contract manufacturing.
